I sing the body electric,The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them,They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them,And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul.Walt Whitman, “I Sing The Body Electric”
Usually, I’m not a huge Walt Whitman fan, but I was looking for a title that would stick in my ear, and that’s what stuck after some pruning, so here we are. This is my blog and this is where I talk about new music that I love.
Like a lot of other middle-class people with Spotify accounts, I found out this decade just how much music there is in the world, and after starting to see local shows in 2015, and meeting artists with Bandcamp accounts, that world expanded even wider, engulfing me with the sheer amount of talent that exists in America alone, to say nothing of Britain, France, and beyond. I shoved down the urge to write about any of it for as long as I could. It’s intimidating how many music blogs are out there already; the last thing I wanted to do was add to the noise.
In the end, as Walt says with his cryptic vocabulary, the sheer force of the artists I have heard “will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them, / And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul.”
I don’t think I can do anything as confusingly abstract or beautiful with my own writing, but I can sure as hell try. I want to sing the nation electric, and explore the world of music in 2017, and I invite you to sing with me, one album at a time.
I’ll be focusing on independent releases, from folk to hip-hop to black metal, and everything in between. Swing by every Sunday for a fresh album review. You’ll find my enthusiastic description, along with links aplenty. Down the road, I’d love to start interviewing independent artists, and getting a more personal take on these albums, as well as taking guest posts from other writers out there who want to share and create. For now, let’s just call this a review site.
My name’s Sean, by the way. Pleased to meet you.
